29 August 2025 - Monemvasia

Steve prepared the boat, while I went to the bakery and we were ready to leave around 8.30. The boat next door had gone, there was little wind, which all made conditions for an easy departure. Slipping out of a slot, while raising the anchor in a small harbour always carries some apprehension about possible snags, but today it was about as easy as it gets. It was a glorious morning, with not a cloud to be seen. A couple of hours of light wind gave us chance to have a pleasant sail before the wind died. The hills of this long finger of the Peloponnese are rugged, with just a few buildings.    The approach to Monemvasia was as picturesque as we remembered from visiting here in May. Whereas, in the spring the marina was quiet, a few small private yachts joining the local fishing boats, today it is packed. The outside pontoon is lined with large motor cruisers and inside a couple of even bigger ones are tied to the outside wall. The largest dominates the entrance. On the quay, thr...

28 August 2025 - Tyros

Image
Tyros is a delightful, quiet holiday town, frequented by middle class Greeks. The sea front is lined with small hotels. Sunshades line the shingle beach. It has a relaxed atmosphere, which seems a whole away from bustling Porto Cheli. No loud music in the evening and night here. Coffee shops and restaurants have tables right next to the sea, so you sit at the water’s edge enjoying a drink, a meal or an ice cream. The evening temperature is in the 20s Celsius; very pleasant. The cutest boat we have seen in ages. At night, its rigging was lit. Distance today  -          0 miles Distance this year - 732 miles  Tricia (and  Steve )

Sunday 24th August - Wednesday 27th August The autumn cruise and adventures begin.  Travelling to Greece on Sunday was an adventure in itself, involving a taxi, airplane, underground train across Athens, ferry and a short walk. It all went very smoothly; despite leaving Heathrow a few minutes late, we arrived in Athens earlier than scheduled, which allowed us to grab a meal at the port. We left home at 6.00am and arrived in Ermioni at 10.45pm, local time. The two hour time difference meant that it didn’t feel quite so late. The lady owner of our B&B was at her taverna to let us in and it was a great place to stay, with everything we needed. Beautifully decorated too. On Monday we picked up a hire car to make the hour drive to Nafplion to visit Customs to comply with one of the demands of the Greek authorities. It was a good thing that the guy in the boatyard office had given us a pin drop of the location, as it was an unassuming building in the suburb of Nafplion. At leas...
