Sunday 20 April 2025 - Gaios on Paxos
We continued our zigzagging back and forth across the northern Ionian today. It was a leisurely start as the distance was only going to be around 14 miles, so we had time to wander along the front and get a coffee at one of the few cafes that were open.
The destination was Gaios on the eastern side of the island
of Paxos and with no wind, we had to motor all the way. We have not visited this town before, and had
heard that there was a new pontoon which would be available at this time of
year. Presumably it will be fully occupied when we get to busier parts of the season. It is a gorgeous little town, set behind a
couple of smaller islands which give shelter from all directions. The weather forecast indicated that we might
get a bit of a blow from the west, but we didn’t feel any of it at all, so it
might be that the shelter was perfect.
We had various walking trips into town, with Tricia and Chris going several kilometres, through the town and out of the other side. During the day it seemed to be all closed , but in the evening one or two café / bars were open and one was packed with every one of the twenty or so tables occupied.
The only other inhabited vessel on the pontoon was a large
catamaran, being sailed by some very friendly Norwegians. Their plan was to
sail directly back to Split in Croatia, which they expected to take about 52
hours non stop. They went for a swim in the crystal clear water, with one “diving”
(well a cross between a bomb and a belly flop) from the highest bit of superstructure
on the yacht, about 5 metres above the water. One of the others went to the
same place and stood for ages contemplating the dive, before deciding that the
next level down, at about 3.5 metres was a safer bet. His dive was rather more elegant.
