Thursday 10 April 2025 - Brindisi

The bow thruster worked this morning, so it will remain a mystery as to why the electrical contact wasn’t being made, to cause it not to work yesterday. In light airs, we can manage fine to manoeuvre without it, but it’s a psychological crutch to know it’s there if you need it.

The temperature had been forecast to drop to 3C overnight, so, for the first time ever, we left the heating running all night. It’s quite noisy and I’ll be very happy not to have to do that again in a hurry, but we were nice and cosy warm.

Cala Ponte is a very pretty spot and the view of Polignano a Mare is wonderful, as you leave. There was little wind for most of the journey, and, thankfully, the swell had calmed down. Around lunchtime, we had enough wind so we hoisted the sails and had a pleasant couple of hours sailing. As ever, being without the noise of the engine is bliss.

The marina at Cala Ponte has these old fishermen's cottages. The old amongst the new.

We are sailing, we are sailing....

The harbour of Brindisi was very quiet, with no ferries docked. We headed to our usual quay, right inside the inner harbour, in the heart of the town. Palm trees line the seafront promenade. Today there were lots of pagodas and cabins being erected, clearly for a festival. After landing, we learned that an Italian tall ship on a world tour will arrive on Saturday morning. It’s been twenty years since it was last in Brindisi, so there is great excitement.

Distance today -      43 Miles
