Wednesday 30 April 2025 - Pylos
We were up at 6.00, with the plan to leave at sunrise 06:40. As we prepared ourselves and the boat, a cruise ship was being guided in to the port by a tug. A second ship was out to sea, on it’s way.
Thankfully for us, we slipped out of the berth and lifted
the anchor with no problems, so were able to depart just as the first ship had
docked and the second one was three miles away. Being able to see where they
are on the AIS and hear the captain talking to the port on the VHF is so
helpful. These ships are quite close in before they slow down. We kept in the
shallows, well out of the way and made our intentions clear, I hope it was appreciated
by their crew.
During the day the wind was up and down, so after a mixture of motoring and some very nice sailing, we arrived in Pylos around 5.00pm. We came her last year and liked it a lot, so it is a pleasure to return. It’s a small holiday town at the southern end of a large bay.
| The entrance to the bay is guarded by Greece's answer to The Needles |
There was one space left on the east side of the harbour wall, just where we wanted to go. The mooring can be tricky, against a high wall, with only widely spaced bollards, but when others are there and happy to help by taking lines, it is marvellous. Enjoying a beer in one of the town square outdoor cafes at the end of a long day out on the water is such a pleasure.
