15 September 2025 - Vasiliki, Lefkas

This was a day of contrasts. It started with a run along the undulating road around the bay of Spartokhori. It was peaceful and quiet, with most of the sailors on the numerous boat still asleep. Two or three runners passed us by.

A short time later people were surfacing and preparing their boats for departure. A charter boat next to us had seven German youngsters on board, who we found very nice and personable. They had various levels of experience, they told us and it appeared that one of the girls was having a lesson in leaving their parking slot. It didn’t go well, but they managed to escape doing any damage to their boat or the one on their other side. It will have been a big learning curve for her.

It was a short motor in almost no wind through the relatively narrow passage between Meganisi and Lefkas, then along the south coast of Lefkas to Vasiliki. We wanted to arrive by one o’clock, when the afternoon wind, famous in this bay, started to blow. Vasiliki is a mecca for windsurfers, because this wind gives them a wonderful time, screaming up and down the bay. It didn’t disappoint. We were entertained all afternoon, watching what grew to more than seventy windsurfers and wing foils blasting up and down the bay. It seems amazing that they never have a crash, but these are the folks who are reasonably competent.

Vasiliki doing what it does...

It's like being surrounded by a swarm of butterflies

In the early evening, with wind of force 5/6 and strong gusts, we suddenly realised we were dragging our anchor. I had been in the water to check it was dug in when we arrived, but we suspected that the swinging in the big gusts had pulled it loose. It was all action stations as the boat was drifting rapidly and we were still surrounded by the windsurfers. We re-laid the anchor and then the same thing happened again well after dark. We spent and uncomfortable few hours while the wind still blew hard until about 10.30pm, when, at last it dropped. Nevertheless we were both up and various stages during the nigh to check we were secure, so it wasn’t a restful night.
