30 and 31 August 2025 - Monemvasia

Saturday morning there was a run, a visit to the Port Police and a trip up the mast, and all before breakfacy.

We had wondered about a fleet of very posh looking black transit van type, executive vehicles constantly ferrying people to and fro from the supper yachts. Where were they going? There’s not much in the way of sight seeing places this far down this finger of the Peloponnese. Monemvasia is a small, lovely little holiday village, but it’s not the sort of place that super yachts would normally go. There are no night clubs to rave away the night, for example. The mystery deepened on Saturday evening, when they were all sounding their fog horns for several minutes, starting at a random time of 8.22pm. We learned later that it was a wedding. One of the smaller motor boats was decorated with white ribbons. We didn’t catch sight of a bride and groom, but the scene all suddenly made sense.

Amongst all this entertainment, the wind was blowing with huge gusts during the afternoon and it worsened during the evening. The yacht next to us was dragging their anchor, so they and we put out second anchors. We also ran a rope from our bow to the quay and from our bow to the bow of the yacht next door. This all rather stabilised our end of the row of yachts, but would prevent two fishing boats from getting out. I guess, being a windy Sunday, meant that they didn’t leave, so we enjoyed a peaceful night.

On Sunday, the larger motor vessels left, even though the sea rough. Probably the wealthy wedding guests had to return to Athens during the weekend. I suspect the schools will go back next week, but we’ll see. Certainly by Sunday afternoon, the harbour had emptied out and returned to it’s usual quite. We won’t miss the fleet of black cars charging along the quay and back, way too fast. For us, we must stay put for another couple of days until the high winds subside. It is not even possible to move to one of the better vacated spots because, trying to raise out anchor in this small harbour in big winds would be foolhardy.

It was a top temperature of 36 C on Sunday afternoon, so an afternoon swim off the town’s single beach was just the thing for cooling down.
