5 & 6 September 2025 - Kalamata & Koroni
We’ve passed by Koroni twice before, but have gone for easier options to stop. The reports of anchoring in the bay around the harbour are of difficulty, because of rocks and thin, hard sand. The ideal for anchoring is thick sand or mud. Today we really wanted to make anchoring off Koroni work so that we could meet up with Chantal, who was one of my teammates on the Clipper race. She has a house in a hamlet close to the centre of Koroni and she happens to be there at the moment, with two friends staying. I haven’t seen her for about twelve years.
Steve and I stocked up with the fresh provisions that we need for the next few days. That’s always a pleasure in Kalamata; fresh fruit and vegetables are abundant at this time of the year, of good quality and inexpensive here.
On the third attempt we managed to get the anchor to dig in. At each go, I went in with mask and snorkel to check, so it was a relief when we had finally found a good spot.
After cleaning ourselves up, we took the tender ashore and met up with Chantal, her two friends from school and an English couple, Dominic and Helen, who have made Koroni their permanent home. It was super evening with lively conversation and some great food. They know the best dished to choose in each of the seafront restaurants.
Distance today - 15 miles
